Family Fun Night at Montague Elementary

Kids riding bikes Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition family fun night
October 2, 2012 - 1:10pm -- Megan

On Friday evening, September 28th, our Santa Clara Safe Routes to School team arrived at Montague Elementary School with the car packed tight. We had a large box of helmets, supplies to put on a "Snail Race," a "Map My Route" table, and a picture board for the kids to put their faces through, transforming them into a sun riding a bicycle. Calmar Bicycles helped out too, volunteering to assist with basic tune-ups for the kids' bikes. Though we had all the necessary supplies, we had no idea how many enthusiastic young cyclists were about to show up.

Once 6:00 pm hit, the blacktop rapidly became overrun by kids of all sizes riding bikes. Excited kids quickly lined up to be the next "Snail Race" champions with their parents rooting them on. The line for the mechanic soon exceeded our expectations and we had to put another team member in that area to pump tires. Plenty more kids were content racing their bikes around the black top.

We were anticipating a handful of kids to bring their bikes to Family Fun Night; this projection was way off! We saw at least 70 kids smiling and riding their bikes that evening. Safe Routes to School made this event a huge success with happy students and satisfied parents.
