Safe Routes to School in Belmont Redwood Shores

Student Artwork
October 19, 2012 - 1:33pm -- Megan

In addition to working in the Santa Clara School District, the Safe Routes to School team has made their way north to the Belmont/Redwood Shores district.

These schools have made impressive efforts to encourage more walking and biking. At Cipriani Elementary, the school made a designated space to store bikes since so many students brought their bike to the rodeo. The walls at Cipriani were also decorated with student artwork representing International Walk to School Day.

Speaking of International Walk to School Day, Redwood Shores Elementary boasts handing out almost 300 stickers to students who participated in the event. Additionally, they have begun Walk and Roll Wednesdays. This means that every Wednesday morning parent volunteers meet with students and walk to school. These organized walking groups, aka Walking School Buses, create a positive community and foster healthy habits.

Regularly filled bike racks are not uncommon at some of these schools. The SRTS program will add to these positive transportation habits to develop model schools for biking and walking.

The SR2S team is working on implementing after school programs as well...Stay tuned!
