Adding a little color to the site

February 3, 2012 - 2:33am -- maiki

One of the design goals for the new site is to incorporate more media in the presentation, and to make it easy for everyone to share.

We hope to include a lot more photos in posts, so everyone can see how vibrant and diverse the cycling community is in Silicon Valley (and it doesn't hurt that nearly everyone has a camera on them at all times!). ^_^

Changelog

January 31, 2012 - 10:19pm -- maiki

This will be the inaugural changelog. I am not going to follow any particular standard; rather, I will try to make it as readable as possible, so folks at home can play along.
Feel free to leave comments if you want clarification on anything. ^_^

Spam and site weirdness

February 22, 2009 - 12:48pm -- maiki

If you follow the general RSS feed you may have noticed some spam popping up. That is because the forums are included there, and that is the one place that posts are added to the site without a moderator looking at them first.

I just activated reCAPTCHA, which will hopefully curb the amount of spam accounts that get created. The CAPTCHA will only show up on the create accounts form, so if you are all ready logged in and have an account you shouldn't see it.

E-mail discussion list

December 26, 2008 - 6:48pm -- maiki

Related to the recent downtime of the website, the South Bay Cycling e-mail discussion list is currently unavailable.

It is being worked on, and I will puts updates here.

Update #1: The website went down, and is back up again. It will stay up this time, we now have enough resources allocated to it. The mailing list is pending the hosting company getting back to me.

Update #2: The mailing list is back.

A holiday miracle!

December 25, 2008 - 11:27am -- maiki

Not really, but if you are reading this it means the website is back, and hopefully still running.

The issue seems that the site has gotten too big for shared hosting, at least that is what Dreamhost is saying. Their support staff is checked out for Christmas, so I haven't gotten much out of them since Tuesday.

At any rate, I optimized a few portions of the site, so that should hold it together until we can either switch on dedicated service, or move to another hosting company...

Happy Holidays! ^_^

I wrecked!

December 17, 2008 - 11:24pm -- maiki

I got in the first bike accident since I was... a teenager? It turns out that one should not fold their bike while they are still riding it. Go figure!

You can read all about it on my other blog, as well as get grossed out from photos of my skinned up knee!

I learned a valuable lesson tonight: single speed bikes don't go that fast! ^_^

Read all about it at: http://interi.org/2008/12/me-folding-bike/.

Gary Brustin and cycling law

November 17, 2008 - 5:27pm -- maiki

Gary Brustin spoke last Thursday about Bicycling and the Law, and I have to say it was a really great talk. I personally learned a lot, and I took some notes to share with folks who couldn’t make it (make sure to come next time!).

This post is pretty list happy, that is how I take notes.

The first portion concerned common accident scenarios. Gary had interesting stories to go along with each of these, and used his lawyer-drawing skills to show us how these all worked out:

The internet is commenting

November 12, 2008 - 9:04pm -- maiki

I turned off the unregistered commenting. There seems to be a flurry of spam activity coming out of Russia, and our comment queue was filling up and making it difficult to find legit comments. So, for the moment it will be off.

If I hear that some folks really, really want to comment without registering an account on the site, then I will consider setting up something like reCAPTCHA.

RSS feeds, all on one page

October 26, 2008 - 4:41pm -- maiki

For those of you who want to subscribe to RSS feeds and are not using a feed aware web browser, I just put up a page that contains the useful feeds on the site.

http://bikesiliconvalley.org/syndication

As it says there, those aren't the only feeds on the site. Whenever there is a list of posts somewhere a feed is generated. You can find those feeds by looking for the orange RSS button at the bottom of the navigation bar.

Tour de Cupcake

October 8, 2008 - 6:41pm -- maiki

A friend told me about this alleycat race presented by the Bike Kitchen: Tour de Cupcake!

I know we have a lot of health nuts conscious folks in the cycling community, and cupcakes may not be the best impetus to join... but that just leaves more for me!

Anyone else planning on attending? I would love to cruise around with some SVBCers and chow down on cupcakes. Sounds glorious! ^_^
