Fun and edgy bike shop ads

New York, New York

May 31, 2012

I had the opportunity to check out some of the innovative bike facilities in New York last week--in the best way possible: riding around on a rented tourist bike.

First, let me say that the City produces an amazing bike map, and the new High Line park is really cool. Second--although they have some neat facilities, there are still some issues... exemplified by times like when my partner... read the whole blog post.

114 stolen bicycles...

May 26, 2012

From SFGate:

Officers from Ingleside station following a tip went to the home of Irving Sanchez on the 200 block of Charter Oak Avenue in Silver Terrace, where they found eight allegedly stolen bikes in his kitchen, police said. A subsequent search of two Oakland storage lockers he had rented turned up 81 bicycles in one and 25 in another, along with 80 bike tires and a frame.

SVBC member and BART BIKES ONboard campaigner Adina Levin offers the following advice to guide your comments on the BART Draft Bicycle Plan.

For your comments on the BART Bike Plan...

If you are working on your comments for BART's new Bike Plan before the deadline on May 27, consider adding a comment about the bike blackout period.

When BART surveyed customers about what... read the whole blog post.

Fifteen years of Bike to Work Day

May 24, 2012

The following guest blog was written by I-Heng McComb, who previously contacted SVBC just to thank us for putting Bike to Work Day together. Thank YOU, I-Heng!

Someone once told me about a guy who went skydiving for the first time to celebrate his birthday. He became immediately addicted and that same week, he dropped out of college, moved into the skydive center trailer park, and... read the whole blog post.

Stanford mitigation funds update

May 22, 2012

I just got back from a meeting of the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors, where I spoke in favor of two bike/pedestrian infrastructure projects that would benefit significantly if approved to be funded through decade-old mitigation money from Stanford. As is often the case, the outcome was mixed, but mostly positive.

Initially, Board President Shirakawa had proposed an indefinite... read the whole blog post.

Burritos from start to finish

May 17, 2012

My bike to Work Day began at 6:45 am (not my finest hour), when I boarded a vacant northbound Caltrain to Mountain View. It was pretty early, and I suppose most people riding the rails at that hour opted for the baby bullet that departed a few minutes earlier, so I was all alone in the bike car. No worries about getting bumped, at least!

A fifteen-minute train ride and quick pedal... read the whole blog post.

King of the Mountain

May 16, 2012

SVBC members were invited this year to join our first team ride effort at the Silicon Valley Leadership Group's King of the Mountain (KOM) charity ride. Much to our surprise, and to the credit of team leaders and board members Shiloh Ballard and Alyssa Plicka, we were able to recruit 16 people to the SVBC team! It was great fun--and, we took third place in the "largest team" competition!

Good showing for the Bay Trail

May 16, 2012

I'd like to thank the SVBC members who attended Liz Kniss' press event this morning, where she officially announced a proposal to invest $5 million in the Adobe Creek Bicycle/Pedestrian Bridge over Highway 101 in Palo Alto and $3 million in the Dumbarton link to the Bay Trail in East Palo Alto (a project SVBC advocates have been working on in conjunction with our Facebook campaign).

A Bike to Work Day to remember!

May 14, 2012

Although I’ve ridden on Bike to Work Day for the past five years, Thursday was my first time behind the table, passing out coffee cake, bagels, and bananas to all of my fellow cyclists. I was posted at the California Avenue Energizer Station, right near the Caltrain station, so we had lots of visitors, including quite a few of my neighbors! When we started closing up shop around 9:00 am, the... read the whole blog post.
