The future of transportation is here

February 1, 2012 - 12:06pm -- Visitor

This timely blog just in from SVBC Board of Directors member Ian Dewar. Listen up and act fast!

The Future of transportation is here… and it does not look good for cyclists.

On Thursday Feb 2nd, the House Transportation committee will take the first vote on the new transportation bill called the American Energy and Infrastructure Jobs Act. This bill shockingly eliminates all federal funding for biking and walking. This is a $260 billion bill that will support all federally funded transportation programs for the next five years. Not only has the bill removed mention to key cycling projects, it actively eliminates programs that most cycling funding comes from, including Safe Routes to School and the Transportation Enhancements program.

Action Alert: Keep walking and biking money in the federal transportation bill

September 13, 2011 - 10:27am -- colin

Head to Transportation for America to email your Senator in seconds.

This year, around $700 million of Federal transportation funds, which in reality is less than 2 percent of total transportation dollars, will be spent on bicycling and walking. In 2012 that figure might be a big fat zero.

Action Alert: Support the three-foot passing bill

May 27, 2011 - 11:30am -- colin

This Action Alert is from Dan Snyder, Relaunch Director and CEO of the California Bicycle Coalition. Let's all help support the passage of this important bill!

Senate Bill 910 (Lowenthal) would require motorists to give bicyclists at least 3 feet of clearance when passing from behind under most circumstances.

Next week SB 910 will be heard by the full Senate and we want to ensure that it receives strong support. So we're asking bike advocacy organizations and individuals throughout the state to send their own letters of support to their state senators.

Action Alert: Call Senator Boxer TODAY to keep bicycling funded

May 12, 2011 - 11:01am -- colin

UPDATE 5/27: The Senator has committed to supporting active transportation! Send her a thank-you note to let her know we appreciate it.

The California Bicycle Coalition is asking all California cycling advocates to take a minute out of Bike to Work Day to call Senator Boxer's office.

Action alert: Protect state bicycle funds

April 25, 2011 - 2:40pm -- colin

The California Bicycle Coalition is warning that Caltrans may be getting ready to take away millions of dollars in bicycle and pedestrian funding.

In the latest budget deal, the two parties agreed to rescind $2.5 billion in unspent federal transportation funds. Caltrans has to give back some money, but they can decide which funds they send back. Based upon history, we know what happens next: Caltrans mostly gives back the funds that your community uses to pay for bike lanes, trails, and education programs!

Action alert: Safe Routes to School needs your support

April 15, 2011 - 12:00pm -- colin

Act now to Ask your Senators to support the Safe Routes to School bill!

This week, twelve Senators - led by Senators Harkin (D-IA), Sanders (D-VT), and Merkley (D-OR) introduced legislation (S. 800) to sustain
and strengthen the federal Safe Routes to School program. Congress is looking to scale back transportation spending - so it's critical that we send a strong message that the federal Safe Routes to School program should be preserved. Please take a few minutes to do two simple things to build Senate support for Safe Routes to School:
