Friends of Caltrain urge action

June 8, 2011 - 11:12am -- colin

Friends of Caltrain has put out a request for action in order to secure funding for Caltrain through 2012:

1) The last stop for Caltrain funding for 2012 is the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC). The Planning and Allocations committee is meeting on Wednesday, June 8 at 10am - they are going to be reviewing the last $5 million to complete Caltrain's operating budget for FY2012 starting this summer. This is short notice, but if you can make this meeting to encourage MTC to fund Caltrain, please RSVP to friends@friendsofcaltrain.com for coordination and talking points.

Supervisor Ken Yeager reports: more bikes on Caltrain!

May 6, 2011 - 10:33am -- colin

This just in from Santa Clara County Supervisor and Caltrain Board Member Ken Yeager:

Greetings-

I have good news for Caltrain riders who bring bikes aboard as part of their commute. At today’s Caltrain Board meeting, I voted to allocate $300,000 to convert 10 passenger cars into bike cars. This will guarantee that each train set will include two bike cars. This not only increases overall bike capacity, but improves consistency and lessens the likelihood that bike riders will get “bumped” from the train.

Imagine your cycling world without Caltrain

February 1, 2011 - 11:44am -- Carlos

Imagine the west side of San Francisco Bay; San Franscico, San Mateo, and Santa Clara Counties without Caltrain linking each of the 29 cities along the way. Imagine the school children who can't get to school. Imagine the business deals that don't get signed, the job applicant who can't make the interview, or the Giants fan who can't see her world champion team.

The future of Caltrain

January 25, 2011 - 8:21pm -- corinne

As people may have read about already--Caltrain is facing a major funding shortfall that will affect schedules and service as early as this July.

It's very unusual that a major commuter rail does not have a dedicated funding source. Caltrain has been jointly funded since the early nineties (the last time it had a funding emergency) by VTA, SamTrans, and Muni--the transit organizations in each of the three counties that Caltrain serves. Those three agencies have their own funding difficulties.

Building Our Future, One Step at a Time

August 29, 2010 - 1:10pm -- Carlos

San Jose Diridon StationThese are exciting times for residents of San Jose, but especially for the people who work, visit, and play in downtown and surrounding neighborhoods. As we all know, transportation improvements are coming to the Diridon Station area in the form of BART, High Speed Rail, the electrification of Caltrain, and expanded services for Amtrak, the ACE train, and the Capital Corridor.

August 2, 2010 - 10:25am -- Carlos

san carlos logo The City of San Carlos announced last week that they are embarking on a project to increase bicycling and walking on the east side of the San Carlos Caltrain Station. A big portion of the funding came from MTC, a regional transportation funding agency.

Caltrain needs feedback on draft Access Program Policy

April 21, 2010 - 1:41pm -- colin

Caltrain is really reaching out to the bicycling and walking communities lately. You might recall that the agency recently solicited members for their new bicycle advisory committee. Now, Caltrain is soliciting input on a draft Caltrain Comprehensive Access Program Policy. The plan looks at ways to promote increased ridership through greater access to stations by walking, biking, and transit.

The draft policy can be accessed by clicking the following link:

Caltrain seeks volunteers for bicycle advisory committee

March 31, 2010 - 1:28pm -- colin

One of the best ways for cyclists to affect the state of cycling in their localities is by joining the bicycle/pedestrian advisory committee (B/PAC) in the town where they live or work. B/PACs are also utilized by transit authorities and other public agencies. Now Caltrain has announced that it will form its own bicycle advisory committee. This is a great opportunity for SVBC members in both Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties to work with Caltrain to make the system even more accommodating to cyclists.
