In February, State Senator Alan Lowenthal of Long Beach introduced SB 1464, the new three-foot passing bill the California Bicycle Coalition is cosponsoring with the City of Los Angeles. It's identical to last year's three-foot bill (SB 910), but without the language the governor found problematic.

A three-foot passing bill supported by the California Bicycle Coalition (CBC) and thousands of statewide cycling advocates was approved yesterday by the Assembly Transportation Committee in a raucous hearing that reflected California’s deeply conflicted relationship to motor vehicles and driving.

Senate approves three-foot passing bill
California could soon become the nation's 19th state to enact a 3-foot passing law to protect bicyclists. Last week the California Senate approved CBC-sponsored Senate Bill 910 by a 27-9 vote, sending the bill to the Assembly.

Senate Bill 910 (Lowenthal) would require motorists to give bicyclists at least 3 feet of clearance when passing from behind under most circumstances.
Next week SB 910 will be heard by the full Senate and we want to ensure that it receives strong support. So we're asking bike advocacy organizations and individuals throughout the state to send their own letters of support to their state senators.
