SVBC San Jose Team meeting

The SVBC San Jose Team meets each fourth Wednesday of the month. Dinner and networking start at 6:00 pm, then get the meeting rolling at 7:00.

Come join us to meet your cycling neighbors and get involved in local bike advocacy! Policy suggestions from the local teams will be submitted to the SVBC Policy Advisory Committee and help shape our advocacy efforts. We'll also plan for fun events and work on strategies to expand and improve bike facilities in and around San Jose.

Commute alternatives with the San José Green Team

January 19, 2012 - 3:48pm -- colin

I spent a couple hours at the San José City Hall today, tabling at a commute alternatives fair hosted by the City's Green Team. In addition to the SVBC table, there were representatives from the City of San José Department of Transportation, 511.org, Valley Transit Authority, Clipper, Bay Area Air Quality Management District, and others.

San José bike update

October 6, 2011 - 2:23pm -- corinne

City of San José staff is studying converting lanes on 3rd, 4th, 10th, and 11th Streets through downtown from motor vehicle lanes to bike lanes! I had mentioned several months ago to Department of Transportation leadership that San José is already falling behind on implementing the goals in their recently adopted bike plan--and that they had the power to make significant things happen even without significant funding... all they need to do is convert under-utilized motor vehicle lanes to buffered bike lanes.

A Saturday spent fighting climate change

September 30, 2011 - 11:56am -- colin

Last Saturday, I joined a hundred or so other environmentally-minded souls for a relaxing bike tour of central San José. The Moving Planet Day bike ride was organized by local advocate, SVBC member, and KKUP on-air personality Diane Solomon, with help from SVBC, San José Bike Party, TransForm, the Loma Prieta Chapter of the Sierra Club, and others.

The Silicon Valley Bike Advocacy Summit comes to an end

April 11, 2011 - 1:35pm -- colin

Well, it's all over with. The Silicon Valley Bike Advocacy Summit has come and gone. It was a pretty crazy ride for me over the last two or three months. It was the first time I had planned an event, and I had more questions than answers. Were people going to show up? Were the speakers going to confirm? What should the topics be? How big does the room need to be? Where will we get extra laptops? WHAT ABOUT FOOD? IS IT ALL GOING TO FALL APART? WHEN WILL THIS TERROR END???

Hedding bike lanes

Wow, I'm so thrilled! The VTA Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee (BPAC), Citizen Advisory Committee (CAC), and Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) have all recommended a list of Transportation Fund for Clean Air (TFCA) and Bicycle Expenditure Plan (BEP) projects to the VTA board for final approval next week... and one of them is bike lanes on Hedding in San Jose from Park to 17th!

Dinner with San José Vice Mayor Madison Nguyen

March 25, 2011 - 11:34am -- corinne

Last night I had dinner with San Jose Vice Mayor Madison Nguyen and 12 other women CEOs. Thanks go to Tech CU and the Silicon Valley Leadership Group for hosting the dinner.

I was pleased to have an opportunity to discuss cycling with Vice Mayor Nguyen in a more casual setting than the council chambers. She seemed very supportive and hinted that we might work together to enhance the City of San José--as Vice Mayor, she would like to leave a positive mark on the entire City.

Parking is plentiful, but hey how about bicycles?

January 25, 2011 - 12:52pm -- Carlos

Tonight (January 25) the San José City Council will accept the draft plan for the Diridon Station Area as well the recommendations from the Good Neighbor Committee. What does that mean for you, Ms. or Mr. Cyclist? Well for one, how about great transportation options when attending a Sharks game? Instead of paying $20 to park a car how about great options to ride your bike or take VTA light rail to the game?

Blast from the past - bicycles in the news in 1938

January 17, 2011 - 12:10pm -- Carlos

"Small boys and girls should not be allowed to ride their bicycles on the sidewalk" was the opinion of one San Jose mother in a January 11, 1938 San Jose Evening News article (on page 19 of 24). Although the number of children who ride or walk to school has decreased since this 1938 editorial was written, bicycle safety for children is a growing concern given the congestion that has increased around our schools.
