My small role in a recent win

January 11, 2012 - 2:35pm -- colin

I attended the Menlo Park Planning Commission meeting on Monday night to deliver some comments regarding the Facebook environmental impact report (EIR) on behalf of SVBC. I mentioned the fact that the bicycle would be a great way to mitigate some of the traffic, noise, and air pollution that the EIR cites as "areas of controversy." It's not unusual for me to visit such meetings and comment on projects, but the efforts that lead up to this meeting were pretty extraordinary.

Sports Basement gives SVBC five percent

December 22, 2011 - 2:23pm -- colin

Sports Basement, a long-time supporter of SVBC and our members, has stepped up their generosity recently with a new 5%-back deal. In addition to their already awesome 10% discount given to SVBC members, they will now donate 5% of all member purchases back to SVBC. Seriously!

To clarify: you go to Sports Basement, buy some new gear at a great price with your 10% SVBC member discount, then Sports Basement says “Hey, how about we take five percent of that purchase and give it to SVBC?” You win, we win, Sports Basement wins your repeat business, because you love a good company, right?

San José bike update

October 6, 2011 - 2:23pm -- corinne

City of San José staff is studying converting lanes on 3rd, 4th, 10th, and 11th Streets through downtown from motor vehicle lanes to bike lanes! I had mentioned several months ago to Department of Transportation leadership that San José is already falling behind on implementing the goals in their recently adopted bike plan--and that they had the power to make significant things happen even without significant funding... all they need to do is convert under-utilized motor vehicle lanes to buffered bike lanes.

Stanford, which has partnered with SVBC in the past on initiatives like our Share the Road campaign, is the only university to earn Platinum designation from the League.

New San José overpass design addresses SVBC's concerns

February 14, 2011 - 6:06pm -- colin

Those of you traveling past the Tully Road Highway 101 overpass may have noticed something different in the past couple of weeks - namely that it's out of commission. The overpass is being replaced with a new, multi-modal design that Valley Transit Authority (VTA) fought to get approved by Caltrans. SVBC worked with VTA to provide support for the much safer highway crossing from the cycling community.

Transportation Authority approves $80,000 matching funds for Redwood City bike share

January 11, 2011 - 1:29pm -- colin

On January 6, the San Mateo County Transportation Authority Board of Directors voted to approve allocation of $80,000 of Measure A funds to match $6.5 million in regional grant funds being applied to a bicycle share program. The regional grants were not eligible for infrastructure projects, making bicycle sharing an ideal application. The approval is a big win for cyclists for a number of reasons:

  • Providing convenient access to bicycles is a great way to foster new and beginning cyclists.

SVBC works to enhance Safe Routes to School

February 10, 2010 - 10:59am -- colin

Safe Routes to School (SRTS) projects in the Bay Area have recently gotten a shot in the arm. SVBC, together with the Bay Area Bicycle Coalition, worked with the Metropolitan Traffic Commission (MTC) to secure SRTS funding in the Commission’s recent "Climate Action Plan." There is $17 million available for SRTS projects across the Bay Area, with $1.43 million and $4.04 million going to San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties, respectively. Distribution of funds was based on K – 12 school enrollment in the various counties.
