State-level activity

This is the type of activity that SVBC should definitely contribute to:

On Jan 7, 12:40 pm, "Jim Baross" jimbar...@cox.net wrote in the CABOforum e-mail list:

I am counting the meeting yesterday, Jan. 6, in Senator Kehoe's Sacramento
office as a success!

Caltrans, CHP and others - listing later - agreed to work with us on several
approaches to issues we (Alan Wachtel, Bob Shanteau, James Lombardo, and I)
raised on behalf of CABO, CBC, LAB and all others who support bicycling in a
safe, courteous and legal manner.

A couple of highlights from the meeting -

Caltrans Director Randell Iwasaki offered to support Calif. Traffic Control
Devices Committee membership expansion to include a bicycling
representative. Kehoe offered to write/contact CTCDC to recommend this. No
one voiced opposition.

Calif. Highway Patrol, California State Sheriff's Association, and
California Peace Officers' Association offered to expand, modify and provide
bicycling traffic operation/enforcement training to their officers and to
include us in the development of bicycling operation training programs. .

CHP's Commissioner Joe Farrow agreed to host a first task force meeting
within one month. Other officer associations and Caltrans will participate.
Goals of which include resolving apparent differing approaches to portions
of the Calif. Vehicle Code related to bicycling so that LAB Bike Ed
instruction and Calif. traffic enforcement actions will not be in apparent
conflict.

Caltrans Director Iwasaki offered to review facility "innovation"
experimentation processes and the means available and/or appropriate to
better assure consistent traffic facility design/construction/operation
across the State.

We plan to provide a more complete explanation of the meeting soon.
