Safe and Confident Bicycle Commuting, 201

If you know how to balance and pedal but would like to improve your bicycle handling skills and confidence, our on-bike, off-street class is for you. This group practice, held on a nearby Stanford parking lot, covers several “building block” techniques that are key to enjoying bicycling for transportation and recreation. You’ll see and learn how to:

* Begin pedaling quickly -- without hesitation
* Stop smoothly and precisely -- without fear of falling
* Turn confidently without wobbling -- both while pedaling and coasting
* Steer confidently with one hand -- to safely give a hand signal or use a water bottle
* Scan, signal, and move to a new line of travel -- essential for changing lanes or getting in line with other drivers * Shift gears smoothly and understand when to shift -- to make riding up or down hills easier

The instructors will demonstrate and explain all techniques. Please bring a working bicycle, ready to ride, and a bicycle helmet.

Instructors: John Ciccarelli, League Cycling Instructor, and Jane Rothstein, HIP Coord. of Environmental Behavior Change.
