happened in porto alegre, brazil, on a critical mass demonstration, asking exactly for more respect for bikes. fortunately no one was killed, but driver still on the loose.

Here's the part I love: "The police changed the charges from 'criminal negligent injury' to attempted murder after testimony from the 47-year-old defendant, Ricardo Neis."

...this tells me that the guy was such a sweetheart, that he managed to alienate the local PD.

Perhaps it's just me, but I have a hard time supporting critical mass, wherever it is. I do not, in any way, condone what this driver did. But, if you take a good long look at the people who attend some of these "demonstrations," ask yourself if they're there to promote safe cycling or if they are there for another reason. These demonstrations piss off drivers, annoy the police, especially when they occur during rush hour, and those of us who ride a lot (3-5 days/week, ~4-5K/year) are left to contend with the drivers the next day once the protestors have gone back to smoking dope in their parents basement.
