At the VTA BPAC meeting, Santa Clara County Roads and Airport staff announced that there is a proposal to require special event permits for bike rides with 50 or more people, and where "it is likely some participants would violate the California Vehicle Code."
This would onlu apply to events on Santa Clara County expressways (i.e. Foothill) and on roads in unincorporated areas of the County.
This item is going to the HLUET subcommittee of the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors on November 20, 2008 (agenda item 12)

There is no reason for this
There is no reason for this ordinance change. The county already has an encroachment permit requirement for any event that requires traffic control. Please write to your county supervisors asking them to vote no on this. The two supervisors on th HLUET (Housing, Land Use, Environment, and Transportation) sub committee are McHugh and Gage.
Cycle California! Magazine has already sent letters to all five supervisors opposing this. We urge the SVBC to take a position against this now, rather than waiting until it goes to the full board.
Hi Bob, Please see How to Get
Hi Bob,
Please see How to Get SVBC Involved in a Bicycle Issue on contacting the Board. That is the proactive way to solicit a position from SVBC. ^_^

I just received an update
I just received an update about this ordinance proposal. Since only one member for the HLUET committee was at today's meeting this will go before the entire board of supervisors at some point. We need a united stand from all bicycle advocates against this.
