Join SVBC for Bike to the Movies, a series of bike-themed films on the big screen! The first feature in the series is the 1986 classic Quicksilver. Add to your "6 Degrees of Kevin Bacon" skills and enjoy the tale of a frustrated stockbroker-cum-bike messenger, just trying to make his way in the mean streets of New York.
The evening will also feature a raffle for some top-notch bike schwag. How much does this miraculous night of cycle-centric revelry cost, you ask? Why, nothing at all! The movie is free, a gift from SVBC (with serious help from REI) to you. Just do us a favor - grab a friend, a neighbor, a teacher, your butcher - someone who may not ride their bikes often (or at all) and bring them along. The mind-blowing bicycle theatrics are going to be enough to put the most ardent cynic on two wheels.
Unfortunately, SVBC will not be able to provide bicycle valet parking at the event. The City of San Jose is requiring a permit that is simply not within our budget. Arrival by bicycle is still strongly urged, though, and you are encouraged to lock your ride up somewhere visible. Attached to this post is an image showing nearby bike racks. As the image makes clear, racks are few and far between in downtown San Jose. Perhaps 150+ bicycles locked to railings, signposts, etc. will emphasize to the city the need for adequate parking in one of the main shopping, dining, and transit centers in town. As always, we request that everyone be lawful and respectful while exercising your right to bike rather than drive. Let's turn lemons into delicious lemonade by using this fun and free event as a chance for some impromptu advocacy!
So come on down to Camera 12 in downtown San Jose. Tickets are one per person, first-come, first-served. Don't bother camping out, though - we won't start giving out tickets until 6:00 pm. Doors open at 6:30, and the show starts at 6:45. Be there!
If you would like to volunteer for the event, we would love to have you. Volunteers don't need to wait in line for tickets, either - shifts will occur before and after the show and your admission will be guaranteed. Interested? Contact Jen Brecheen at jen@bikesiliconvalley.org to sign up.
This event is made possible through a generous grant from REI. Special thanks also go to the folks at San Jose Bike Party for helping to coordinate this great community event!
