Should bicycling be restricted on downtown San José sidewalks? Though riding on the sidewalk is not usually preferable, many streets in the heart of San José lack the infrastructure needed to make people on bikes feel comfortable. Wide sidewalks on Santa Clara and through the 1st and 2nd Street transit mall provide an opportunity for travelers to carefully share the walkway with pedestrians. Still, the bad behavior of a few careless people on bikes has raised tensions around this issue.
Multiple options will be considered at this public meeting, including defining and prohibiting "reckless" riding on sidewalks, establishing a speed limit for bikes on the sidewalk, prohibiting bikes from certain stretches of sidewalk that have adjacent bicycle lanes or dense pedestrian usage, or an outright ban. Come share your thoughts and suggestions.
