How to register on new bike discussion list?

I saw a remark in the last SVBC bulletin saying about the defunct svbcbikes.org email list:
"If you would like your email address added back onto the list, or if you want to join for the first time, send an email saying so to bikes@bikesiliconvalley.org. This discussion list is an email forum for bike advocates and is not monitored by SVBC staff. It is a casual environment in which to share news, make suggestions, and ask questions of your fellow bike advocates."

EcoMobility World Congress

Hey all. I'm a born-and-raised San Josean and I happened to be covering the EcoMobility conference in Changwon, South Korea last week.

The keynote speakers had many amazing things to say about bicycling developments throughout the world, but I was a bit saddened when one of them singled out Silicon Valley as an example of cycle-inadequacy.

I had to bite my South Bay pride a bit and admit that we ARE very far behind, and we do need to start forcing our government to think way outside the box. To that point, I appreciate what you guys do and would like to help out.

New bike path to bypass Route 92?

October 20, 2011 - 8:48pm -- austinb

Has there ever been any serious discussion about creating a bike path alongside Route 92?

We live in Half Moon Bay and will occasionally commute to Stanford by bike. It's a totally do-able ride across 92 (about 22 miles), but the alternatives (84 or Tunitas) add considerable mileage and elevation. As you all know, 92 is a total nightmare for cycling. I've heard from one person that a trail was once discussed to go across somewhere just off of 92. Does anyone know about this? Was it ever seriously on the table? Would there be support?

Thanks,
Austin

Stolen Valor Act

October 20, 2011 - 2:28am -- diannaK

I read in an article that the United States Supreme Court, on Monday, declared that they would be hearing a problem to the Stolen Valor Act. The free speech protections of the First Amendment may be dishonored by the Stolen Valor Act. If this is the case, then the law, meant to defend military honors, might actually be unconstitutional. I found the article here: Supreme Court agrees to hear arguments about Stolen Valor Act

Habitual drunk driver on Old La Honda?

October 9, 2011 - 3:50pm -- pwsouth

In the last few weeks I have observed many empty half-pint vodka bottles on the right side of Old La Honda when heading up the hill from Portola, all around the first couple switchbacks. They are all of the same brand, a cheap one that comes in plastic bottles.

If you have experience with drunks you are probably getting the same sick feeling that I am: this litter probably comes from someone who lives or works in the area (possibly someone who lives on Old La Honda) who is a daily drinker and I'm guessing there are many more bottles out of sight in the brush or over the side.

lawyer recommendations for bike accident?

October 3, 2011 - 11:52am -- lynnY

Hi all,

I am hoping someone can help. I was biking to work through Menlo Park months ago and was involved in an accident that cost me two broken fingers, two surgeries and many months of physical therapy. I am trying to follow up with the other party but my claim was denied.

Are there any recommendations for lawyers that handle this type of case? I am looking for advice and help on potential next steps.

Many thanks in advance for any assistance!!
Lynn

General San Jose Cycling Recommendations

August 8, 2011 - 10:35am -- jfkelly

Hi Folks,

I am an avid cyclist/triathlete in Boulder CO, and I'm currently evaluating a relocation to San Jose. I'll be out next week to scope out apartments and the area, and I'm hoping you can give me some good general pointers.

  • I'd be commuting to Cisco on Tasman Dr., and it looks like there are good trails to nearby apartments, but those might be pretty pricey. Are there good, safe neighborhoods farther away that are connected with good biking routes?
  • What are your favorite routes for scenic, weekend road rides in the area?

Fundraiser for injured cyclist: Monday, 7/25

Fundraiser on Monday, July 25th, 5pm at Campo di Bocce, Los Gatos

This fundraiser is to support the family of Bahram Saghari, a Los Gatos resident, Santa Clara University lecturer, and avid cyclist who was in a major accident on Los Gatos Boulevard in late May. Bahram sustained major injuries, including a fractured skull, and is recovering in the hospital. A link to a story about his accident is below.

Does anybody know what the project is on Coleman at 880?

July 20, 2011 - 2:04pm -- mark_s

One of the routes that I take going to work has me taking Coleman ave in San Jose, over the 880 overpass and on to the north. This has never been an example of stellar bicycle infrastructure (there is one point where there is a bike lane on the right hand side of the right turn only lane that takes you onto the freeway, and a yellow 'through traffic merge left' sign) but it works. A week or so ago, they removed the bike lane striping, and put up signs for road work along the North Eastern side of the road, and the bike lane stripe that was there has been removed?

shower before Caltrain?

June 7, 2011 - 9:56am -- bobs

How do you improve your personal aroma before boarding the train?

I live in Saratoga and commute to San Francisco. It's a ten mile ride to the nearest Caltrain station, which is no problem except I arrive sweaty. I would love to have a shower before I board a train in Sunnyvale or Mountain View, or really anywhere in Santa Clara County.

(Yes, I'm asking the folks at bikestation.com

Successful Gout Remedies

A specialized diet for people who suffer from gout might be just what you need if you have joint pain. This health problem occurs when uric acid in the blood develops into crystals that attach to an area that is located near one of the many joints in the body, or on the joints directly.

Foods high in purines should be eliminated from the diet of a patient suffering from gout. The cause of it is that purines contribute to the crystallization process that happens and begets the symptoms that are uncomfortable for people with gout.
