Sharrows

January 20, 2012 - 9:46am -- mark_s

The new (2012) version of the California MUTCD has been released, and has the provision for Sharrows in it. I cannot claim to have fully read and understood the entire manual, but I was wondering what others experience with Sharrows has been.

Multi-lane intersections need longer yellows!

Anyone here have the ear of someone on the City Council? I've noticed that many of the multi-lane streets with bike lanes have stoplights with crazy-short yellows: if you enter the intersection as the light turns yellow, it's almost impossible to get to the far side before cross-traffic gets their green light! :( I admit that I'm usually only doing a leisurely 10 mph, but I'm a commuter, not a road racer. C'mon San Jose, give me an extra second or two?

Does CVC 22400 ban bikes from highways?

An acquaintance of mine argues that CVC 22400 [ http://dmv.ca.gov/pubs/vctop/d11/vc22400.htm ] the "Minimum Speed Law", in its section (a), prohibits bicycles from highways, and thus proves that they don't belong there.

No person shall drive upon a highway at such a slow speed as to impede or block the normal and reasonable movement of traffic, unless the reduced speed is necessary for safe operation, because of a grade, or in compliance with law.

East-West South Bay bike route along High Speed Rail

February 9, 2010 - 4:52pm -- Isaac

I moved to Sunnyvale last April. I haven’t had a car since last November and I have been using my bicycle as my primary mode of transportation. The bike lanes around Sunnyvale are very good, but commuting beyond Sunnyvale is very difficult. In order to increase the commuting distance by bike for all citizens in Sunnyvale, I propose to add a bike lane next to the new High Speed Rail tracks, which will save money, increase health and increase safety for all Sunnyvale residents. Yoriko Kishimoto is running for Assembly Member of the Mountain View district and is a supporter of this idea also.

State-level activity

This is the type of activity that SVBC should definitely contribute to:

Crashed on Mt. Eden Road

I regularly ride around Stevens Creek Reservoir by taking Pierce Road to Mt. Eden Road which becomes Stevens Canyon Road. On Sunday December 20, 2009 at 1:00 PM I crashed at about 30 mph on a patch of gravel where the road has been repaired, just a few hundred yards down from the summit by the archery range. (Thank you to the cyclist and car driver who stopped and helped me with my wounds.) I'm dealing with a broken clavicle, scapula and some possible rotator cuff issues due to the accident. Has anyone else crashed here recently?

Which Cycling Politics: Doom or Possibility?

October 3, 2009 - 10:33am -- bobs

Here's an excellent advocacy piece. The examples are from Florida but the principles apply here in Silicon Valley.

Which Cycling Politics: Doom or Possibility?

"The real questions are, “What collective story do cyclists want to live by?” and “What kind of story will get us to where we want to be?” A story of limits and tragedy, or a story of personal growth and freedom?"

Ticketing on Alpine and Portola Rds.

On wednesday, 1 July, at 9:50 AM, the "Dave Stahl ride" was on Portola Rd. heading for OLH, about 17 people. Near the entrance to Windy Hill, we were low-keying it, most people riding on the shoulder, Dave, at least one other rider, and I were just to the left of the fog line. Two San Mateo sheriff's deputy motorcycles passed us going the other way, one with his red and blue lights on. They turned around and singled out those of us riding to the left of the fog line to stop. The others were told they could continue.

hostility 101 at de la cruz in san jose

It use to be one lane merged onto south bound
highway 101 just past central expressway

then someone got the idea to have two
lanes merge onto the freeway
and changed the configuration of the ramp

now its more dangerous to cross over the
highway
as people tend to honk or cut off bikes
without signaling

as I said on KGO rant friday/any topic fri

101 at de la cruz, yield to bikes
im not getting on the freeway!

whom to complain too?
or raise this concern too?

thanks
