On this crisp December morning, the Santa Clara Safe Routes to School team led a Walking School Bus for Briarwood Elementary School-the theme was an "Umbrella Walk." The sun may have been out, but each breath of air condensed into a tiny, temporary cloud of white. Do you remember walking to school? Maybe you were even lucky enough to ride your bike. Thirty years ago roughly 50% of students walked to school. Those numbers have dropped to an astounding 16% in 2001 and will continue to decline as a sedentary lifestyle becomes the norm. It’s time to take action and change this mind set! Fall has arrived and with it comes school festivals. The Santa Clara Safe Routes to School Team has been busy keeping students active in the dreary weather with stationary bike races. Sutter Elementary held their annual Sutterfest event on October 19th where 260 students raced, traveling roughly 30 miles. In addition to working in the Santa Clara School District, the Safe Routes to School team has made their way north to the Belmont/Redwood Shores district.
